Shimla, the “Queen of Hill Stations” is a scenic town which is a perfect place for a peaceful vacation. There are many beautiful sights here which attract thousands of tourists every year. There cannot be a single list of things to do in Shimla but we can definitely highlight the top 5.
1. Hop on the Kalka-Shimla railway
The iconic kalka-Shimla railway is included in the UNESCO heritage list. It is a narrow gauge railway and it passes through more than 100 tunnels in its journey. There are a total of 18 stations and 864 bridges. The railway journey is very famous and BBC has already made 3 documentaries on this.
2. Take a walk at the mall
The Mall is a 7 km long road which is also the main street in Shimla. No tourist vehicles are allowed on this road. It is the most famous tourist attraction in Shimla which can be accessed through lifts on the Cart Road. The highest point on the Mall is the Scandal Point. There are a number of restaurants and departmental stores located here. Further down the mall you will come across the famous Clarke’s hotel where you will get some excellent coffee.
3. Visit the Kufri Ski Resort
Not many people include the Ski Resort in their plans for things to do in Shimla but we feel that it is definitely worth a visit. Kufri is actually a small hill station within Shimla which is always covered with snow. The much renowned Himalayan Wildlife Zoo is located in Kufri.
4. Tee off at Naldehra Golf Course
This is a huge golf course that spreads across 2200 meters. The golf course was built in the 1990s’ and it has 18 tees. The Himalayan cedars surround this course and it looks lovely in the natural surroundings. The course is open to all but you need to pay a small fee to play here.
5. Visit Kinnaur
Kinnaur is enclosed by mountains on three sides and the whole area is covered with woods and orchards. Lots of dry fruits are grown here along with delicious apples. The main attraction of the place is its weather which remains hospitable throughout the year.
